Challenges

“Zulu”, Net Media’s popular live streaming platform is a web and mobile application available on iOS and Android. Zulu was developed and hosted in a local on-premise data centre. As it became popular there was a significant rise in viewership. Due to inability in scaling, they faced the challenge of capacity management.

In order to minimize risk while gradually ramping up its teams’ cloud knowledge and experience, Net Media wanted to avoid re-structuring the application. The key objective was to migrate Zulu to a cloud hosting environment without any changes while ensuring the platform’s availability and scalability. The customer was looking for a professional services organization with a comprehensive Google Cloud Platform (GCP) competency to help migrate the Zulu application from their on-premies infrastructure to cloud.

Meeting the requirements with minimum cost

A team of GCP certified solution architects from Cloud Comrade conducted an extensive study of their existing architecture. They defined the processes, procedures and migration methodology to ensure the highest levels of availability of the system during migration. The lift-and-shift methodology was chosen as a migration approach, leveraging automated migration tools.

Minimal downtime, backup replication, or snapshot technologies were recommended by Cloud Comrade for hassle-free lift and shift migration of applications. Velostrata, the GCP’s real-time enterprise migration tool was used to organize the systems and make the migration strategy manageable.

To provide a comprehensive set of Google-managed networking capabilities, including subnetworks with auto and custom IP address range selection, routers, Virtual Private Network (VPN) was used. Google Cloud Domain Name System (DNS)  was used to provide a scalable, reliable and managed authoritative service running on the same infrastructure as Google.

The availability of the application improved tremendously and continues its operations even when there is a failure on one part of the system,”- Iman Ibrahim Yusuf, Head of Digital

The solution was designed for fault tolerance by distributing, load-balancing, and clustering workloads across multiple zones with the help of Virtual Machine Migration.  A strong emphasis on security was demonstrated by a multi-layered approach, incorporating premier security services/tools from GCP and other third party vendors.

Gaining a competitive edge over other players

Net Media using Velastrata controls to plan, execute, and monitor their migration to GCP at each step of the journey.

NetMedia now has the ability to scale their system easily in order to meet the demands of the users. The availability of the application improved tremendously and continues its operations even when there is a failure on one part of the system. The Organization was able to meet its requirements with minimum cost compared to hosting the application on-premise. Net Media has transformed its business models and has gained a competitive edge over other players in its industry through the early adoption of cloud computing technologies.

The Project Started on November 2018 and went live in January 2019
